Taking Orthographic Screenshots for Maps

So, you got an awesome map and you want to make a minimap from it.

Well, here's how you take a screenshot suitable for a map.

Before attempting this you will want to turn world detail as high as you can and set water reflections as low as possible.  Also time of day is probably best set to sometime during the day /MMM has an option for that.

Perform the following steps to take an orthographic screenshot to convert into a mini map.

  1. Be logged in on the map you want to take a shot of with a character capable of issuing admin commands.
  2. Activate MMM and enable no collisions plus whatever else you want to activate to prevent yourself from being geeked while engaging in photography.
  3. Now get yourself positioned centralized and high up in the map so you can roughly see everything.
  4. Angle the camera so you are facing as directly north as possible.
  5. Type in /fogdist 30000 30000 (default is /fogdist 0 0 in case you want to go back to default fog settings).  You have now banished the fog to the netherrealms.
  6. Type /ortho 1 the camera is now in orthographic projection.
  7. At this point attempting to mouse-look will zap you to a rather particualr set of coordinates facing south and looking down, which might be inconvenient for your shot, so avoid attempting to mouse look.
  8. You can use turn left/right keys to angle yourself however but it'll be awfully hard to get everything level in this state.
  9. Take your screen shot.
